Frequently Asked Questions
Right! What's this all about?
Well think about it...you breathe around 20.000 a day! Makes sense to spend some time on this, right?
Breathwork is the overarching term for everything that has to do with conscious breathing.
It can be used to activate the system, to wind down after a long day or to process any stuck energy.
Overall, breathwork will help you optimise your physical and emotional state of being.
Ok…So it’s not all about cold water?
No! You’ve probably heard about breathwork and cold water exposure from the legend himself: Wim Hof.
Wim is an incredible person who brought the breath to so many people and we deeply respect and thank him for that.
But the world of breathwork is way older and more expansive than that.
Having said that, cold water exposure does have a lot of general health benefits and is a great way to practice your breath control.
Here you can find a post with more information about this: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWsbOlNIauY/
I’ve done some Pranayama at my yoga class, is that the same as breathwork?
Well…yes and no. Since breathwork doesn’t have an official definition some people might call it that.
The difference is that Pranayama is predominantly focused on breath control and is most often used as preparation for meditation.
Arguably one could say that Pranayama are more breathing techniques, like box breathing is for example.
Some of the Cards in the deck will say "Original name:” which refers to the original Pranayama exercise.
Breathwork specifically tends to refer to Conscious Connected breathing, and comes from the world of Rebirthing (Leonard Orr) and Holotropic breath (Stanislav Grof).
Gotcha! So where do I start, besides the card deck?
First have a think for yourself...what would you like to get out of it?
If you want to relax or energise, there are some great YouTube videos out there which will be around 10 to 20minutes. Maybe have a look at the SOMA Breath, Take a deep Breath or DMT Breathing. You might recognise some of these exercises from the card deck.
If you feel like you want to go even deeper and do some emotional processing, look into Conscious Connected breathing.
That’s the type of breathing used in the free video and it’s the main technique that Breathlife uses for breathwork sessions.
This can be incredibly powerful, so when you feel ready, come join!
Also, have a look at the book “Breath” by James Nestor. An amazing introduction to the world of breathing. It’s also worth it to check out the Huberman Lab podcast, they often talk about the breath and the nervous system.
What is the easiest way to calm down when I feel stressed?
If you need a quick fix: The Physiological sigh.
A double inhale with an extended exhale, maybe even with a "ahhhh..". You know the one, the sound you make when you lie down after a long day.
If you have a little more time, remember the 1:2 ratio. Doubling the length of the exhale compared to the inhale.
i.e. 4 seconds inhale, 8 seconds exhale.
Can I contact Breathlife if I have any other questions?
Absolutely! Always feel free to send a DM on Instagram or email info@breathlife.co.uk for anything else you want to know.
